Upcoming Bilingual Play with a Mission to Inspire your Family

Imparting our culture on to the next generation is a task in which we pride ourselves in. From traditions that span generations to the language we speak it is important that our children have the chance to experience it. With this same principle in mind was born a special theater company who has made it their mission to pass on our heritage through entertaining bilingual plays for the past 30 years. It is our pleasure to announce that the award-winning Teatro SEA will be performing a tale about the true meaning of heroes, “My Superhero, Roberto Clemente” this Friday May 6th. “We try to teach kids, and everybody — it’s a great show for the entire family — tTeatro SEA -My Hero Roberto Clemente, New York Cityhe fact that you as a human being can be real life superhero through the power of love, communication, and other values,” said Miguel Flores, who plays Roberto Clemente. “It’s been amazing, the feedback we’ve received has been very powerful. A lot of people knew about Roberto Clemente the baseball player, but they didn’t know about Roberto Clemente the humanitarian,” he said. This piece incorporates universal themes of friendship and love with the school curriculum by talking about civil rights with figures such as Martin Luther King, in addition to sharing Latino heritage through the Spanish language and a display of traditions. There is a valuable lesson in here for everyone, not just for children. “It’s a very special play for you to be able to connect with who you are as a person and what it means to fight for your dreams,” shared Flores. One of the main characters in the play is a shy Mexican boy named Bruno whose favorite superhero is Batman. He is trying to fit in with a group of bigger and bolder children. Bruno is a relatable character and one who has a very important job. “Telling the kids this Teatro SEA -My Hero Roberto Clemente, New York Cityis who you are, be proud to be a Latino,” shared the actor who plays him, Jorge Castilla. Castilla has been a member of Teatro SEA for the past seven years, during which time he has witnessed incredible growth within the theater company. "The productions have grown greatly, they have become more ambitious in a very good way. We are reaching out to more kids,” he said. “Making educational theater for kids totally free is our main goal. and I think we’re moving there.” This theater company is without a doubt making significant strides towards empowerment and Latino pride, we couldn’t be more excited to host them at our very own Villa Victoria Center for the Arts. As Castilla explained “Both organizations [IBA and Teatro SEA] try to talk to a community so that they may be a little bit prouder of who they are and their roots.” Tickets for My Superhero, Roberto Clemente are on sale now....
